Writing for News with the Yale Daily News

A few weeks ago, at the festival, we had the pleasure of hearing from current Editor in Chief of the Yale Daily News, Rachel Treisman. During our time with her, she shared tips with attendees and spoke about a typical news cycle. She also encouraged people to write their own news stories about the festival and submit them to us. Here's one from attendee, Sara Vendetti! If you wrote your own story, please do submit it to us, we'd love to share it!

"People can live a hundred years, without really living for a minute." This sentiment from Logan Huntzberger was carried out on Saturday October 21st, as hundreds of people gathered to live out their fantasy, and attend a Life and Death Brigade event hosted by Colin and Finn. Alan Loayza and Tanc Sade joined forces once more to answer our most riveting questions regarding the elusive secret society. Although Alan and Tanc admit they are not like their characters on the show, they do have a strong appreciation for Gilmore girls. Sade told fans that he loved that at the time the show aired there was nothing else targeted at smart, well read women. Loayza admitted that if he could be any character on the show, he would want to be Rory. It was also very clear these two men are serious about their careers. Laura Frese of Cheverly Maryland stayed, “my favorite thing about the panel was how they were about the business. They work really hard to stay employed, and take care of themselves.”

When asked if their beautiful, blonde friend, Logan, was a baby daddy, Sade pointed at himself and muttered, "Team Finn." Loayza is Team Logan, but for purely selfish reasons, as they would then be uncles and, "probably be putting the baby in some Life & Death Brigade adventures… A little mini umbrella for the baby.”

After the panel, Loayza and Sade set our young adventurers off on a scavenger hunt throughout Kent. The list featured items specific to the Life and Death Brigade including top hats, umbrellas, and gorilla masks. Nothing was stopping these greats, as brigadiers were even seen dressed in elegant gowns, donning gorilla masks, and spreading their message, "In Omnia Paratus. " Kendra O'Donnell, Philadelphia, PA, a brigadier dressed in a top hat and formalwear stated, "I think the concept of the Life and Death Brigade was very entertaining for fans to watch. There were so many details in the scavenger hunt that made the event nostalgic for attendees. We were able to reminisce over one of our favorite episodes, while perhaps going back to the days we were young, and in college."

The scavenger hunt concluded at "The Secret Bar," where brigadiers gathered for libations, and celebrated their once in a lifetime experience.

Only if we want it to be.

Gilmore Girls Fan Fest To Be Held In Washington Depot, Connecticut

WASHINGTON DEPOT, CT (August 23, 2016)—Gilmore Girls Fan Fest today announced plans for a fan festival in Washington Depot, CT, the town widely known as the home to many of the sites Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino gathered inspiration from for her original script. This festival, for fans, by fans, will take place October 21- 23, 2016. A limited number of tickets are available (first come, first serve), at www.gilmoregirlsfanfest.com

The festival offers fans a chance to experience obvious parallels of the fictional town, Stars Hollow, highlighting some of the most pivotal elements that made the town so impressionable to the creator. Washington Depot will host this festival produced by fans, Jennie and Marcus Whitaker. With events inspired by the show, the weekend festivities include but are not limited to, a tea at the inn, a cake tasting at the market, coffee at the hardware store, a staged knit-a-thon, a Friday Night Dinner and photo opps “on the green” to name a few. There will also be screenings of the pilot, the finale and 10 of the episodes from seasons 2-6, to be voted on by festival attendees. Kristi Carlson, author of the “Eat Like a Gilmore” cookbook (coming out at the end of October) will also host an event featuring a recipe you’d find at Luke’s Diner, the Gilmore’s Friday Night Dinners or one of Sookie’s delectable creations from the inn. Oh, and there’s even a real life town troubadour on his way.

To date, the festival has confirmed 8 cast members, including (in order of confirmation) Jackson Douglas (Jackson), Rini Bell (Lulu), Aris Alvarado (Caesar), Biff Yeager (Tom), Kelly Bishop (Emily), Yanic Truesdale (Michel), Vanessa Marano (April) and Ted Rooney (Morey) with an open invite for the rest of the cast, crew and creators. A cast panel will take place on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Town Hall.

As for the “Depot,” they’ve seen unguided visitors for years, who often times pose for pictures at various landmarks around their “village” which makes up the larger town of Washington, CT. As the story goes, Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino stayed at what was the Mayflower Inn (now the Mayflower Grace) gathering inspiration from the area and even putting together pieces of the pilot before leaving town.

“We are excited to play a role in the Gilmore Girls Fan Fest.  For years, we have watched fans look for Gilmore-inspired sites in town and I think this will provide them with even more than they could hope for,” Lisa Stein, President of the Washington Business Association, said. “Washington is full of charming character and stunning natural beauty, it's no wonder the show runner found inspiration from her visit so many years ago. What a great opportunity for us to be able to share this with others!”

The idea was first conceived by festival founders Jennie and Marcus Whitaker on a drive through Connecticut.

“We were sitting in traffic outside of Hartford earlier this summer and my wife looked up the distance between Washington Depot and the location of our car at the time. The next thing I knew we were reaching out to the Town Selectman,” festival co-founder, Marcus Whitaker, said. “There’s been so much momentum and excitement from everyone involved that it continually feels like something that deserves to happen. This town is something to treasure and in many ways has already made an impact on millions of fans around the world.”

And so, October 21-23, this rural Connecticut town, full of unintended, unknown characters and sets, will welcome fans who will gather in Washington Depot for a fulfilling and joyous weekend during one of the most beautiful seasons of the year.

“What comes to mind, for me, every time I think about the festival, is a direct quote from Amy Sherman-Palladino in a 2001 Desert News interview about her thoughts on the series,” festival co-founder, Jennie Whitaker, said. “Pulling one from Amy’s book I’ll say, ‘If I can make people feel this much of what I felt walking around this fairy town, I thought that would be wonderful’. And that’s really why we're doing this, it’s all for fun, for fellow fans.’
